On behalf of or client, NRL are recruiting for a Mechanical Craftsperson for work in the Birmingham area.

Duration:  12 months contract
Location:   Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Birmingham

Qualifications or Required Experience:
City & Guilds (or equivalent)  Mechanical qualifications.
Understanding of AHU, FCU, Boilers, Calorifiers and plantroom equipment.
Indentured apprenticeship or equivalent training.
Healthcare and or Healthcare PFI experience

General Overview:
To carry out maintenance across the entire QEH contract estate.  Responsible for the delivery of mechanical engineering maintenance service in line with contractual obligations, industry best practice and relevant standards and guidance (HTM).  The role is to ensure planned preventive maintenance, testing, breakdown/reactive maintenance activities on the estate are completed and records maintained.

  • The responsibilities will mainly be at the Acute Hospital, but will also include duties at the Mental Health unit and Retained Estate as required by the Estates management team
  • To undertake any reasonable duties to maintain all services to the NHS Trust(s)

Impact: 
The role is vital to ensure that the UHB estate is maintained to a high standard and that all statutory requirements are fully complied with for all services and facilities under the control of the contract.  This role is essential within the workflow process.  The person will be actively involved in supporting with detailed knowledge for their team and the wider engineering resource across the QEH contract estate.

Complexity: 

  • Assist in the operational delivery for site activity
  • To undertake any reasonable duties to maintain all services to the NHS client
  • Provide support to stakeholders such as University Hospitals Birmingham and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trusts where instructed/required
  • To carry out all works in compliance with our clients KPI’s
  • Manage individually assigned work effectively to ensure site performance via use of CAFM systems and other digital based management tools is accurate when reviewed by management
  • Achieve and maintain AP/CP appointments in disciplines as requested by estates management team to support the contract where required and appropriate
  • To be conversant with and work to the current regulations, codes of practice, Health & Safety regulations (CDM), HTMs, and all safety rules both our clients and Statutory
  • Interpret and work from all instructions, drawings and specifications appropriate to his/her own trade, without supervision.
  • Set up New Work appropriate to his/her own trade using relevant tools, equipment and machinery, without supervision, as appropriate to his/her grade.
  • To maintain workshops and working environment in a clean, tidy and safe condition.
  • After appropriate training, work off tower scaffolding, MEWP’s, ladders, and step ladders.
  • To carry out unsupervised maintenance and repairs and report any defects or unusual circumstances to the Mechanical Team Leader.
  • Requirement to learn new techniques with training as necessary.
  • Scope of work will include entering Mortuary, ITU’s, A&E admissions, Operating Theatres etc after reporting to Trust Staff. Occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances could be encountered.
  • To understand the general working of our clients Estate, so that work can be carried out in the most efficient manner, pro-active in developing new ways of working.
  • To understand fully the inter-relationship between various maintenance crafts.
  • To be contacted by radio and/or PDA to receive instructions. This can involve frequent disruption to work patterns.
  • Produce if necessary list of materials to carry out remedial repairs or alterations to current task.
  • Ensure all PPM work is carried out effectively in compliance with maintenance instructions.
  • To record information as required for the operation of Maximo or similar system.
  • To participate in our clients appraisal system.
  • To understand the working of Mechanical systems within our clients Estate.      
  • Diagnose and repair faults in engineering installation, plant and equipment. To deal with new situations as they arise and pass on knowledge to others. To inform Mechanical Team Leader of any delays or difficulties encountered.
  • To maintain and efficiently run plant and equipment as appropriate.
  • To undertake any other duties as requested by Management, in order to comply with our clients contact and KPI’s
  • Staff will be employed on work appropriate to their core specialist skill. They will however progressively be suitably trained to acquire elements of extra skills with the intention of reaching levels of flexibility and competence to enable them to achieve and apply the ability where required to perform the above. Pass knowledge gained to others.
  • Work towards gaining CP duties in one or more disciplines/ Medical gas/pressure systems/water/ ventilation.
