Senior Project Engineer – Tunnels
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer to support the delivery of major infrastructure works in Birmingham. This role focuses on technically complex packages involving MEP, tunnelling, shafts, and pump station construction within large-scale civil engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage delivery of MEP and civils packages including tunnels, shafts, and pump stations
- Ensure works are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to required quality standards
- Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces between civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical teams
- Supervise site activities including installation, commissioning, and testing of MEP systems
- Oversee subcontractors and ensure compliance with specifications, drawings, and programme
- Manage QA processes including ITPs, inspections, and handover documentation
- Review designs, drawings, and specifications ensuring buildability and compliance
- Manage RFIs, technical queries (TQs), and design coordination
- Provide engineering oversight on:
- Underground works (tunnels and shafts)
- Reinforced concrete structures (pumping stations, chambers)
- Steel structures and M&E installations
- Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, site standards, and project RAMS
- Lead site safety culture through inspections, audits, and toolbox talks
- Support safe delivery in complex, high-risk environments (e.g. underground works)
- Liaise with clients, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams
- Provide progress reports and support programme tracking
- Manage delivery risks and implement mitigation strategies
Key Requirements
- Essential Experience
- Proven experience as a Senior Project Engineer on major infrastructure or civil engineering projects
- Strong background in MEP delivery within civils environments
- Demonstrable experience delivering:
- Tunnels and underground structures
- Shaft construction
- Pump stations / utilities / water infrastructure
- Experience with reinforced concrete and structural steel works
- Track record of working on large, complex projects (rail, utilities, infrastructure)
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of QA/QC processes (ITPs, inspections, NCRs, handover)
- Understanding of temporary works and construction sequencing
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary construction activities
Qualifications
- Degree / HNC / HND in Civil Engineering or related discipline
- CSCS Card (essential)
- SMSTS (preferred)
- Temporary Works Coordinator / Supervisor (desirable)
