Job Title Junior SOC Analyst – Lower Thames Crossing (National Highways Project)

Summary Join the team supporting the Lower Thames Crossing Security Operations Centre (SOC) on a short-term assignment. You will monitor and respond to cyber security alerts to keep systems and data secure. This fully remote role is ideal for someone with strong IT awareness and an interest in cyber security who is keen to gain hands-on experience under guidance.

Location and Working Pattern
  • Fully remote
  • Short-term contract covering 5 weeks (3–5 days per week)
  • BYO corporate device (parent organisation laptop recommended; virtual desktop can be provided if needed)
Responsibilities
  • Monitor security alerts from Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Defender XDR
  • Assess and prioritise alerts by severity (High, Medium, Low, Informational)
  • Review suspicious activities such as failed logins, MFA denies and privilege escalations
  • Triage and investigate incidents using tools like incident timelines and investigation graphs
  • Analyse alerts and entities across users, devices, IPs, and files
  • Identify potential threats including ransomware, unauthorised access, and abnormal behaviour
  • Conduct proactive threat hunting on the Sentinel platform
  • Track and classify incidents from opening to closure, raising tickets where required
Must-have Requirements
  • Basic understanding of:
    • Cyber threats and common attack techniques
    • Identity and access security, including MFA and RBAC
  • Strong general IT skills and ability to understand cyber security tooling concepts
Nice-to-have Skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR
  • Knowledge of Azure platform and Exchange Admin Center
  • Experience using open-source intelligence tools such as VirusTotal or MXToolbox
