The role involves the managing and progressing on light civil engineering projects for associated Bus Infrastructure working on secondment within in the offices of the National Transport Authority supporting on the Dublin Bus Network Redesign. 

The NTA is currently embarking on a programme to replace bus stop poles and bus stop customer information to achieve a standard Transport for Ireland (TFI) style nationwide. This programme may require provision of additional bus stop infrastructure, depending on stop location. 

The Design Engineer will be responsible for working across several different departments in the National Transport Authority to coordinate the implementation of a programme for:

  • provision of enhanced bus stop infrastructure (in particular stop poles and shelters).

  • provision of travel information at stops and stations, initially focussing on bus stops and shelters

  • provision of infrastructure at bus terminals

  • provision of other associated infrastructure 

The Design Engineer will be part of a small in-house team of NTA and consultant staff, managed by the Public Transport Stop Manager, and will work in developing and progressing the delivery of the public transport stop enhancement programme nationwide.

The Design Engineer will be required to support the a Programme Manager in coordinating the development and monitoring the implementation of the new programmes for the provision and maintenance of new and existing bus stop infrastructure and of public transport information at all bus stops, Luas stops and rail stations.

The Services provided shall include but is not limited to the following:

  • Working with the Programme Manager to establish and coordinate the delivery of a programme for new or upgraded bus stop/shelter infrastructure and the provision of customer information at bus stops.

  • Working with the Programme Manager to coordinate the maintenance of existing TFI bus stop infrastructure, and the provision of travel information at all bus stops and reporting on progress to internal stakeholders.

  • Working with the Programme Manager and other staff to support projects and programmes including bus network redesigns, and bus terminals.

  • Working with bus operators, local authorities and private landowners to confirm stop locations for new or amended bus route proposals and to prepare tables setting out route alignments, stop locations and stop reference numbers.

  • Undertaking site visits nationwide to inspect, assess, and obtain consents for bus infrastructure.

  • Producing mapping including web mapping for the purposes of displaying route alignments and stop locations.

  • Working closely with the bus stops design team and the bus terminal design team (to be procured separately) to progress infrastructure projects to an agreed programme;

  • Managing the delivery of stop and terminal infrastructure designs, and internal and local authority or land-owner design approvals as required;

  • Identifying the need for new or upgraded bus stop/shelter infrastructure in a specified area, and preparation of reports identifying priorities for improvement;

  • Managing project budgets to ensure value for money and cost certainty on projects.

  • Managing one or more of the Stop Infrastructure Service Level Agreements with bus operators.

  • Working with the Programme Manager and other staff to update and implement guidelines and standards for bus stop/shelter infrastructure and customer information as required;

  • In conjunction with the Accessibility Manager, manage the roll out of seating at certain public transport stops;

  • In conjunction with Irish Rail, coordinating, developing and monitoring the implementation of a programme for the provision of travel information at all rail stations, including the provision of panels for the display of travel information as required;

  • Other activities in relation to the provision or maintenance of public transport stop infrastructure, or passenger information at stops or stations

  • Responding to all queries received on Bus stop infrastructure via a CRM system or any other avenue, in a timely manner.

  • Undertaking any other works, consultation or liaison that may be assigned by the Public Transport Stops Programme Manager to progress the Public Transport Stops Programme.

The resources who shall perform the Services are required to be on-site at various locations nationwide a minimum of 20% of the time during the performance of the Services, for example a minimum of one (1) day per week.
