Our client, an industry leading defence contract, currently have a requirement for a Commercial Manager to support major MoD projects at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. A small amount of site attendance will be required for shareholder meeting etc, otherwise working from home.

As part of the MIP corporate objectives, continue to support the development of the facilities to support the future SSN programme. Responsible for maintaining the optimum relationship with the Authority regarding future nuclear facilities whilst providing contract management support to MIP Framework, MSDF, FMSP and other prime contract agreements as required.

To drive commercial excellence across contracts and projects, to protect Babcock with regard to the acceptability of terms and conditions and to provide guidance, advice, diligence and instruction supporting the tendering, negotiating and placing of subcontracts performed by direct reports.

Accountabilities:
  • The Commercial Manager is professionally accountable to the Head of Commercial.
  • The Commercial Manager is accountable to the Project Managers and associated Heads of Departments for day-to-day contractual matters.
  • The team who are professionally accountable to the Commercial Manager are Contract Managers, Senior Contracts Engineers, Senior Quantity Surveyors, Commercial Support Officer and Administration support.

Principal Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • To act as the Company's representative and a principal point of contact.
  • Be proactive in building contractual relationships with subcontractors and the Authority.
  • Act as Bid Manager for specified Projects or as nominated at the Bid/No Bid Meeting.
  • Advise/instruct the SI team with regard to the customer requirements
  • Develop and deliver tendering / contracting strategies.
  • Supervise/undertake the preparation and presentation of commercial and board tender review documentation.
  • Manage the Prime and Subcontract tendering, bid and contract award process.
  • Negotiate and manage complex Prime/Sub-contracts.
  • Draft contracts and provide responses on terms and conditions of proposed contracts.
  • Review contract documents before acceptance.
  • Supervise/hand over contract to project.
  • Chair meetings both internal and external with customers and suppliers
  • Provide contractual support during a running contract.
  • Resolve and negotiate contractual claims for and against the Company.
  • Day to day management of department/supervision staff

Role SQEP Requirements:
  • Academic The Commercial Manager should ideally be educated to Degree standard (or equivalent) in either Business Studies, Law, Engineering or MCIPS qualified.
  • Experience Demonstrable experience in contract administration. Good analytical skills and the ability to think ‘commercially’.
  • Good communication and negotiation skills.
  • Must be computer literate (Word, Excel, IFS).
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of MoD and subcontract contractual terms and conditions.
  • Proven experience in contract management / administration
