NRL are currently recruiting a Structural Design Engineer for a role based in Cramlington.

This is a contracted role with the duration of 3-6 months.


The Structural Design Engineer will provide detailed mechanical and structural design of gas turbine air intake filtration systems, combustion exhaust gas systems and acoustic components and all associated steelwork structures.

Accountabilities:
• Provide technical solutions to structural and mechanical problems in line with company best practice.
• Work in line with international codes and standards.
• Investigate cost reduction ideas and provide genuine cost downs on individual projects.
• Support manufacturing and drawing office teams in the production of the manufactured products.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for following safety guidelines and applying them in all aspect of work.
  • Mechanical and structural design of company products and systems for power generation, oil and gas and similar industrial projects worldwide.
  • Producing cost-effective designs in compliance with specified requirements, within budget and to pre-defined deadlines
  • Reviewing of client specifications, clearly identifying technical, engineering and commercial requirements and risks.
  • Provision of technical support to sales, projects, manufacturing and customer service departments
  • Prepares and supports Design Reviews as directed by Applications Manager and Chief Engineer.
Stakeholder Interactions:
The Structural Design Engineer is required to have strong communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders. The ability to communicate detailed technical information accurately is imperative to ensure the department meets KPI’s, internal compliance procedures, and overall customer satisfaction.

  • Supply chain and functional support teams.
  • Equipment / component manufacturers.
  • Local and / or other P&I facilities.

  • Key contributors to the local P&I team.
  • Employees within and across the business globally.
The Structural Design Engineer may be required to provide mentoring and coaching to the wider team when required in order to develop colleagues.

Knowledge/Experience:

Technically competent and knowledgeable with credible background expected of a Design Engineer. 

Essential
  • Strong background of using STAAD software with demonstrable structural design experience.
  • Previous experience in wind, seismic, transportation, erection and operational load derivations and design calculations.
  • Experience of producing designs using UK and International structural design, building codes and standards (IBC, ASCE, API, Eurocode, etc).
  • Experience of 3D structural analysis and 2D software packages.
Desirable
  • Experience in the use of software systems such as Ansys and Autodesk Inventor.
  • Previous experience gained within the industry or similar industries i.e. Mechanical, O&G, Energy and Power Generation.
  • Previous experience in industry involved in fabrication, sheet metal work, and welding.

Education Requirements:

Essential
  • BEng in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant technical subject.
Desirable
  • Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD certified user or professional
  • EngTech status or above with IMechE (or equivalent engineering body)

The Structural Design Engineer will need to be flexible with the ability to work across multiple time zones, cultures, and languages, as needed.  Willing to alter work times, communication methods, etc. to support communication and project progression through the various company global resources and locations.
