NRL’s prestigious Civil Construction client is looking to recruit a Senior Design Engineer to join their Watford Team on a permanent staff basis. Hybrid working is on offer.


About the role:

  • You will join the Temporary Works Design team, and will be involved in civils, buildings and facilities management.

  • Take responsibility for the production of a number of designs/projects within a design team.

  • Apply engineering principles, knowledge of the construction process, and sound engineering judgement to the development of solutions to engineering problems.

  • Carry out design in accordance with codes and standards.

  • Contribute to the management of the department.

  • Provide guidance and training to design team members.

  • Manage own time with multiple tasks and assists others to do the same.

  • Understand the defined roles under CDM and ensure compliance within the team.

  • Ensure the appropriate and correct use of technology within the design team.

  • Delegate clearly and effectively, considering business and personal development needs.

  • Assign work to individuals or set up teams to complete sections of work.

  • Co-ordinate the input of other members of the design team.

  • Engage with the supply chain and include them in the development of solutions.

  • Compare the relative merits of different suppliers and their appropriateness to a design solution.

  • Maintain knowledge of proprietary equipment and techniques.

  • Maintain continuing professional development.

  • Effectively use specialist or bespoke software in a variety of situations and provide confirmation of output with hand calculations.

  • Use standard software to accelerate complex calculations or when at the limit of available technology.

  • Understand the mechanism for design cost recovery and keep appropriate records, and support others to do the same.

  • Recognise the implications of changes and respond accordingly.

  • Contribute to departmental prioritisation of work and allocation of designer and checker.

  • Provide support to the performance and development of team members.

  • Encourage and motivate team members.

  • Understand what BIM is, the contextual requirement for BIM Level 2 and its connection to the Government Construction Strategy and Industrial Strategy 2025.

What you will need:

  • BSC civil engineering/structural

  • Chartership or working towards

  • Strong experience as a designer

  • Temporary works experience
