This Lead PES Engineer (Principal Control Systems Engineer) contract role, operating inside IR35 and based out of Warrington with hybrid working, sits within the nuclear industry and offers the opportunity to take ownership of programmable electronic systems delivery across complex, safety‑critical projects.

You’ll operate at the heart of the Integrated Project Team, acting as the technical authority for PES and CE&I delivery, guiding systems from early concept through to commissioning and handover. The role offers real influence over engineering decisions, standards and delivery strategy within a highly regulated environment.

This position suits an engineer who is comfortable operating across multiple stakeholders, understands the interaction between control systems, operational technology and safety cases, and can confidently lead PES delivery across several concurrent projects.

What you’ll be responsible for
  • Leading end‑to‑end PES delivery across multiple projects, from requirements capture to handover
  • Acting as the CE&I / PES focal point within Integrated Project Teams
  • Applying V‑model and systems engineering principles aligned to ISO/IEC 15288
  • Managing PES inputs from the supply chain, including authoring, checking, verification and validation
  • Engaging with operators, maintainers, safety case managers, construction and commissioning teams
  • Identifying, managing and escalating technical, safety and engineering risks
  • Ensuring PES solutions are delivered to quality, cost and schedule expectations
What we’re looking for
  • Strong experience delivering control systems / PES solutions through the full lifecycle
  • Demonstrable use of requirements management, V‑model and validation frameworks
  • Background in highly regulated industries (nuclear, defence, pharma, energy, etc.)
  • Understanding of industrial cyber security principles (e.g. IEC / BS 62443)
  • Experience managing PES design and build suppliers, ideally within NEC contracts
  • Confident communicator with the ability to influence at senior stakeholder level
Why this role stands out
  • Involvement in nationally significant nuclear programmes
  • High degree of technical ownership and autonomy
  • Complex engineering challenges with no off‑the‑shelf solutions
  • Opportunity to shape PES standards, governance and delivery approach
