Job Title Operations Technician (Development Programme)

Summary
We are seeking a motivated individual to join our Operations Team as part of a structured 2–3 year Development Programme. This permanent role will cover both Kilroot and Ballylumford power stations in Northern Ireland, offering comprehensive training towards becoming a fully qualified Operations Technician. It’s an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong technical background to develop their expertise in power generation operations.

Location and Working Pattern Kilroot Power Station and Ballylumford Power Station, Northern Ireland. Full-time on-site role.

Client Overview
Our client operates major power generation facilities in Northern Ireland, delivering reliable energy solutions and maintaining high operational standards across their sites.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe and efficient operation of units and associated plant, meeting safety, commercial and environmental requirements.
  • Operate plant in line with established procedures and standing instructions to maximise efficiency.
  • Conduct on-load and off-load inspections, reporting defects through the Computerised Maintenance Management System and other logging systems.
  • Liaise with maintenance and engineering teams to resolve operating problems under direction.
  • Manage plant start-up and shutdown processes, including synchronisation and load adjustments.
  • Monitor main and auxiliary plant performance, correcting abnormalities within defined limits.
  • Communicate operational changes during shift handovers and maintain accurate electronic log updates.
  • Support incident response procedures and participate in team-based projects to enhance site performance.

Must-have Requirements

  • Recognised apprenticeship or equivalent training in a relevant engineering discipline; OR A-level qualifications combined with significant experience in plant operations or maintenance.
  • Understanding of plant operations, technical regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Hands-on experience in operating and/or maintaining plant equipment.
  • Strong numerical skills and logical approach to problem-solving.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-have Skills

  • Awareness of commercial drivers and financial considerations in power generation.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, safety rules and compliance frameworks.
  • HV switching experience or exposure to incident response protocols.
