Duration: Temp to Perm opportunity for the right candidate (Until Sun, 31 May 2026)
Location: Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, B15
Working Pattern: 4 on / 4 off rotation (07:00–19:00 / 19:00–07:00)
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly capable and experienced
Facilities Manager (Shifts) to oversee the delivery of engineering and hard FM services across the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) contract. This is a key operational leadership role that ensures all planned, reactive, and compliance-driven maintenance is completed safely, efficiently, and to the high standards required within a healthcare environment.
Operating across a 24/7 shift pattern, you will ensure full statutory compliance, support critical hospital operations, and maintain the estate to all contractual and HTM standards. Although primarily based at the Acute Hospital, the role will also extend to the Mental Health Unit and Retained Estate where required.
Key Responsibilities Operational & Service Delivery- Lead day-to-day facilities and engineering operations across shift-based teams.
- Oversee delivery of statutory, planned, and reactive maintenance activities.
- Ensure effective resource allocation and workflow management via CAFM and digital systems.
- Support delivery of services to University Hospitals Birmingham and Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust.
Compliance & Risk Management- Ensure full compliance with HTMs, CDM, Health & Safety regulations, and KPIs.
- Hold and maintain AP/CP appointments where required (Mechanical, Electrical, MGPS, Ventilation, LV/HV).
- Conduct Management Safety Visits and internal/external compliance audits.
- Manage emergencies, incidents, and escalations affecting estate safety or performance.
Team Leadership & Performance- Lead and support engineering staff across shifts, including performance management, absence management, rota coverage, and personnel issues.
- Maintain safe, clean, and compliant workshops and workspaces.
- Undertake quality assurance, ensuring minimum 10% monthly audit checks on completed work.
- Identify training needs, competency gaps, and development opportunities across the team.
Technical Oversight- Interpret engineering documents, specifications, and instructions without supervision.
- Oversee maintenance and inspection of tools, plant, access equipment, and first-aid resources.
- Support accurate asset data capture for lifecycle planning and condition surveys.
- Respond confidently to sensitive or critical hospital environments (Theatres, A&E, ITU, Mortuary).
Qualifications & Experience Essential- Minimum 5 years’ management experience in NHS or similar critical infrastructure environment.
- Demonstrable management/supervisory competence or relevant qualification.
- Indentured apprenticeship or equivalent technical training.
- Strong background in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with relevant City & Guilds qualifications:
Mechanical:- C&G Mechanical Engineering Level 2 & 3
- C&G Pipefitting & Plumbing Level 2 & 3
Electrical:- Approved apprenticeship (C&G 236 / 2360 / 2330 / 2560)
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
- C&G 2394 / 2395 Testing & Inspection
- Minimum 5 years LV and HV experience.
