NRL are currently recruiting for a Design Manager on behalf of out clients at the forefront of the UK's future in low carbon energy generating systems. A full time, permanent position based in Blackburn.

The Company

Our client are energy solutions providers who design, build, operate and maintain centralised and efficient low carbon energy projects. They currently support hospitals, universities, new build residential developments, towns and cities as well as industrial and commercial building de-carbonisation. They work on ground-breaking projects throughout the UK which are leading the way to achieving the UK’s Net Zero targets.

About the role:

As a result of successful company growth, Our client are looking for a Design Manager to join their design team based in the Head Office in Blackburn.

Their design team interact with all departments and are responsible for delivering innovative solutions. Projects you could be involved with range from energy reduction measures for an existing building to a multi-MW solar farm or a city-wide heat network utilising low carbon heat pumps.

They have a diverse and creative design team who have successfully delivered award winning zero carbon solutions and are proud to say that all of our projects are designed in-house as part of multi-disciplinary engineering team. As a Design Manager you will be responsible for supporting the successful delivery of our design packages in line with project program and budget.


Your key duties:

  • Reporting to the Associate Technical Manager you will be responsible for:

  • Managing the design process using commercial, contractual, program awareness and technical expertise

  • Supporting, understanding and advising departments/clients as to the requirements and obligations in the development of the design information

  • Ensuring the design process recognises the current legislation, standards and codes of practice and is of a high-quality standard

  • Eliminating or reducing health and safety risks in the design

  • Managing or reducing the financial risks during construction process

Supporting continuous improvement in areas such as:

  • Drawing/Document Standards.

  • Future In House Software Development

  • Future In-House System Build

  • Operating in accordance with Quality, Health and Safety and Environmental Management Systems and other agreed procedures.

  • Maintaining good working relationships with colleagues, site installation teams and project teams

  • Liaising with clients on design queries

  • Supporting the input of CDM detail within the company’s processes and legislation

  • Supporting the preparation of HAZOP Studies.

What you will need

  • Skills/Experience

  • Education to a Degree level in a construction or engineering discipline

  • Demonstrable experience in a client facing design role within the engineering or construction industry

  • Has professional membership or chartered status with a relevant professional body.

  • Demonstrable experience in a design manager role

  • Familiar with RIBA plan of work

  • Has a passion and interest in emerging technologies within the Energy Market and supporting the drive to Net Zero

  • Excellent people management skills with the ability to lead, coach and inspire a team

  • Flexible approach to managing workload with the ability to work to deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Able to work effectively as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team

  • Demonstrate resilience in challenging situations

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft software packages including, Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Full UK driving licence
