This Senior EC&I Engineer role is based in Bolton, offering a salary of £45,000–£59,000 and a structured working pattern of office‑based Monday to Thursday with home working on Friday mornings. You’ll be joining a well‑established UK engineering manufacturer specialising in the design and delivery of safety‑critical access and door systems for nuclear, defence, transport and other high‑hazard environments. The business has a long track record of delivering bespoke, compliant solutions where failure is not an option — and engineering rigour genuinely matters.
This is a senior, technically focused position where you’ll act as the focal point for EC&I design across complex projects, working closely with mechanical engineers, project teams and external stakeholders. You’ll be trusted to take ownership of design decisions, ensure compliance with machinery safety legislation, and support systems through their full lifecycle.
What you’ll be doing- Leading EC&I design activities from concept through to installation and commissioning support
- Producing detailed control system designs including wiring schematics, panel layouts and cable schedules
- Verifying Performance Levels (PL) using SISTEMA and ensuring compliance with the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations
- Supporting site teams with fault diagnosis and technical problem‑solving
- Checking and approving EC&I drawings and documentation in line with internal processes
- Liaising with internal teams, subcontractors and customers on safety‑critical systems
What you’ll bring- Proven experience as an EC&I Engineer within automated doors, access systems or similar electromechanical environments
- Strong understanding of machinery safety legislation and functional safety principles
- Ability to design compliant EC&I systems independently
- Experience producing drawings, calculations, reports and technical documentation
- Familiarity with standards such as BS EN 16005, BS EN 12453, BS EN ISO 13849 and BS EN 60204
- Confidence fault‑finding and supporting complex control systems
