Senior Project Engineer – Contract (Inside IR35) – Capenhurst

If you’re an experienced Senior Project Engineer who enjoys technical leadership, complex engineering challenges and guiding projects through early‑stage definition to delivery readiness, this role offers a chance to influence a significant multi‑year programme at a highly regulated UK site.

Due to the security restrictions of the facility, candidates must be British citizens.

The Opportunity
You’ll be the technical lead across a portfolio of projects, working closely with Programme Leads and Project Managers to bring in‑flight projects back to compliance, shape new project scopes, and drive engineering deliverables through key gateways.
This is a contract role where your engineering judgement, design leadership and ability to navigate regulated environments will directly impact schedule, cost and technical robustness.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Reviewing existing design strategies, solutions and deliverables to ensure they’re fit‑for‑purpose and compliant with engineering principles, standards and legislation.
  • Supporting governance activities and bringing existing projects back into compliance.
  • Assessing high‑level technical solutions for new projects and defining engineering strategies.
  • Leading and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams to resolve issues and maintain programme alignment.
  • Generating key design documents including URS, Scope of Works, Design Management Plans and Engineering Deliverables Schedules.
  • Preparing for and contributing to formal design reviews (SDDRs/MDDRs).
  • Supporting development of resourced schedules, WBS structures and CEP funding submissions.
  • Engaging with suppliers, reviewing technical documentation and ensuring alignment with programme requirements.
  • Providing HSSSE input and chairing/attending technical meetings as required.
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree‑qualified engineer (Chartered desirable).
  • 8 years’ experience across the full design lifecycle and 5 years in project engineering roles.
  • Background in nuclear or other regulated sectors such as oil & gas, pharma or power generation.
  • Understanding of multidisciplinary engineering, CDM 2015, NEC3 contracts and safety‑through‑design principles.
  • Confident communicator with strong stakeholder, contractor and design‑team coordination abilities.
  • Proven experience producing high‑quality technical documentation and ensuring compliance across engineering deliverables.
Why This Contract?
You’ll shape the early definition and technical pathway of multiple capital projects, with the option to extend into delivery phases. Your expertise will directly influence safety, regulatory alignment and engineering quality across a critical programme.
