NRL are currently recruiting for a Head of NET Zero and Environmental working on a remote basis (with occasional travel to the London area) on a permanent basis.
Purpose of the Job:
This is a senior management position within the Responsible Business team with line management responsibilities for Environmental Manager (Reporting) and Environmental Manager (Manager Systems). The role will lead on the Net Zero Carbon Systems including compliance, environmental reporting and validation, environmental training development and delivery, and monitoring and reporting of non-financial indicators across the business. The role will also cover all environmental compliance obligation and management system. These measures will be used to inform management decisions for driving improvements and innovation into the organisation and promoting best practice at all levels to drive the achievement of our Responsible Business objectives and targets.
Key Accountabilities:
Lead on Net Zero Carbon Strategy managing five NZ workstreams, action plans including implementation, governance and action planning for Board reports
Provide Exec level progress reporting against NZ plan (working closely with procurement and finance functions)
Lead in the creation of fully costed business cases for carbon reduction initiatives, energy, travel, circular economy/ zero waste, water, biodiversity
Lead NZC governance and action planning
Work alongside finance for NZC financial reporting and budget requirements
Lead engagement with the procurement team and supply chain partners to further develop Scope 3 reporting
Lead and process data inputs for the Net Zero Carbon Plan
Deliver internal carbon literacy training
Conduct onsite energy assessments and advise on environmental improvements for operations
Produce carbon reduction business case proposals
Lead on Carbon Trust / SBTi certification
Develop environmental strategies on material topics including energy and fuel, travel, circular economy/ zero waste, water, biodiversity etc
Manage mandatory carbon disclosure reports including PPN06 Carbon Reduction Plan SECR, ESOS, TCFD
Respond to Group reporting requirements
Responsible for the management of external audits in relation to ongoing ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certification
Responsible for the implementation of consistent measurement tools to capture non-financial objectives across the business, including management of environmental apps used for data collation
Lead on trend analysis of environmental KPIs to inform progress on Net Zero milestones and ensure fulfilment of reporting obligations
Responsible for internal and supply chain audits to verify environmental compliance
Lead in the preparation of applications for external awards
Provide business development support as a net zero SME
ISO14001 compliance (Environmental Policy and processes, forms including management review)
Responsible for environmental audit and review of non conformities
Conduct onsite environmental assessments / audits
Supporting completion of environmental permits and waste licences
Responsible for inhouse IEMA certified environmental training delivery for SHEQ and operational teams
Responsible for environmental training covering “AIMS reporting” for contracts
Responsible for Incident Management – onsite when required, review of minors to identify trends
Responsible for Supply chain compliance - auditing suppliers (waste management companies)
Responsible for complete external certifications Ecovardis, Achilles, other client requests
Responsible for providing business development case studies and support
Responding to external assurance audits and actions (Ernst & Young etc)
Outcome, Results and Key Performance Indicators:
Ensure ongoing certification to standards relations to net zero carbon
Improve environmental compliance across the business aligned with ISO14001
Integrate system for supply chain Scope 3 reporting, moving away from spend conversions
Manage robust frameworks to support Net Zero
Support business carbon literacy through developement and delivery of training.
Dimensions of Job:
The role will have a UK scope with divisional and functional engagement. There are two direct report, the Corporate Environmental Manager (Reporting) and Corporate Environmental Manager (Management System).
Key Relationships:
The role works with the NZ Working Groups including Leads at an Exec level, Responsible Business and SHEQ Leads and external partners in relation to NZC.
Engagement with senior SHEQ team will also be required.
You will also work with operational stakeholders to implement decarbonisation measures, and embed action to deliver on environmental metrics and KPI’s set by the divisions in support of corporate targets.
Wider engagement will include business and external carbon data providers, as well as third party data validation auditors.
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience:
Experience in management and implementation of net zero carbon strategies, including engagament with senior business stakeholders to implement net zero carbon strategy
Experience of liaison with relevant external certification bodies
Good knowledge of current energy, carbon, and environmental legislation including requirements related to non-financial reporting (SECR, TCFD)
Extensive experience in operational carbon footprinting, preferably in FM, construction and energy sector
Exceptional collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills, and experience in working across all levels of an organisation
Experience of robust environmental reporting and validation with proven ability to analyse, interpret and present environmental data at appropriate levels for different stakeholder groups
Qualifications:
Degree level education (ideally in an environmental, sustainability, science, or business-related subject) or equivalent experience
Member of a relevant professional Institute e.g. IEMA
