NRL are recruiting for a short-term contract opportunity (initially 2 months, inside IR35) for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to support high-impact National Grid infrastructure projects across the UK.
From HV substations to protection & control systems, this is your chance to lead the design of the UK’s most critical energy assets—fast-paced, focused, and with real-world impact.
This is your opportunity to:
Deliver high-voltage electrical designs – across substations (primary), protection & control (secondary), overhead lines, and cable systems
Lead technical delivery – working with key project personnel to shape robust, compliant, and constructible designs
Work hybrid – with regular site visits to Glasgow, Bristol & SW, London & Uxbridge
Collaborate with Tier 1 & 2 contractors – bringing deep understanding of design & build environments
Make an impact – on projects that power millions across the UK
Your Role:
You’ll be responsible for delivering electrical designs on National Grid projects (400kV), ensuring technical excellence and compliance across all stages of the lifecycle.
You’ll work closely with clients, contractors, and internal teams to drive forward engineering solutions in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
You’ll need to bring:
MEng, BEng or equivalent in Electrical Engineering (accredited)
10+ years’ experience in electrical design, with 2–3 years minimum on National Grid 400kV / HV projects
Strong knowledge of CDAE / LCDAE (optional but valuable)
TP141 registration (desirable)
Experience working directly for contractors on National Grid schemes
Deep understanding of tiered contractor environments and construction interfaces
Proven track record in HV system design across substations, cables, OHL, and protection & control
