Inverness is home to power stations and various oil and gas exploration companies. It is also an important centre for engineering with companies specialising in turbines, boilers, ship engines and generators, used in local fishing and fish farms or for generating electricity.

The transport in and around Inverness is excellent. There are regular buses and trains as well as a ferry to the islands. The coastal towns of Invergordon, Fortrose and Cromarty are also easily reached by road or ferry from Inverness.
