We are seeking a strong commercially minded Construction Design Manager to play a pivotal role for all projects ensuring all design work is coordinated, streamlined and to enhance project efficiency by eliminating risks. This is an essential position for ensuring that all designs align with the company’s objectives, budget requirements, timescales, and deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively lead and manage design process: Oversee the design phase from concept to completion ensuring that all designs are produced on time, to budget, and to a high quality.
  • Coordinate and challenge with Teams: Work closely with architects, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure design integrity and compliance with building regulations, current legislation, codes of practice, and safety standards.
  • Review and Approve Designs: Evaluate design proposals, drawings, and specifications, providing constructive feedback. Able to review key materials and interfaces to ensure they are fit for purpose and provide long-term durable solutions without exposing the company to unnecessary maintenance or H&S risks.
  • Manage Budgets and Timelines: Ensure that project budgets and timelines related to design work are adhered to, adjusting as necessary.
  • Commercially minded: Able to identify, engineer, and maximise savings within the design making it easier, more cost-effective, and faster to build on site to increase margins and reduce latent risks.
  • Act as the Building Regulations Principal Designer.
  • Ability to work alongside Technical Manager, Commercial Team Members, Buyers, Customer Care, and report upwards to Directors.
  • Document Control information pre and post construction including but not limited to RFIs, design information, document approvals, BREEAM, and contributing to handover documentation (O&M’s, H&S Files, As Built, etc.).
  • Negotiate and execute appointments, scope, and fees of consultants and designers where needed.
Skills and Experience
  • Education: A degree in architecture, engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of proven experience in construction design management, with a strong understanding of construction principles and practices.
  • Residential background or experience is desired, and knowledge of apartment blocks is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, attention to detail, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in design and ability to interpret design information quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate with a range of people at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to make reasoned and informed commercial judgements and design decisions.
  • Ability to plan, organise, and manage all aspects of the design.
