NRL is currently recruiting a Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join one of our leading clients in their Nuclear Power Engineering and Technical Services team. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a high-performing project team within a critical sector, supporting the delivery of complex engineering works on a key site within the UK’s nuclear fleet.
You’ll work within a highly regulated environment and collaborate with a range of stakeholders to ensure the safe, timely, and efficient execution of engineering projects. Role- Senior/Principal Electrical Design Enginer
Location- Newcastle/Manchester/Bristol or Warrington
Salary- £75,000 per annum- £85,000 per annum 


  • Act as the Responsible Engineer and Technical Authority on major energy projects of varying sizes. 
  • Lead the definition of EC&I strategies, standards, and best practices across projects.
  • Lead project delivery teams across the project lifecycle from bid generation, through concept and detailed design development to installation and commissioning.
  • Take accountability for delivery of complex EC&I engineering packages to cost, time, and quality.
  • Provide technical leadership, governance, and quality assurance for safety-critical systems.
  • Work on systems integration, testing and validation of PLC, SCADA and simulator systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the practical aspects of implementing engineering designs and understand the use of standards and compliance with regulatory requirements in an engineering environment.
  • Produce high-quality technical reports. 
  • Engage with clients, regulators, and industry bodies at a senior level, building and maintain valuable relationships.
  • Mentor and develop the engineering capability of the wider EC&I team.
  • Drive innovation, digital tools, and continuous improvement in engineering delivery.
  • Support business development, proposals, and client relationship management.
  • Built and manage client relationships and leverage those relationships to deliver continued opportunities and new business leads.

Skills and Qualifications (the following list outlines desirable skills and qualifications. While these attributes are valued, we understand that applicants may not possess all of them. We therefore encourage applications from individuals with relevant experience and potential):
  • MEng, MSc, BEng or BSc or equivalent in EC&I or another relevant discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional body. 
  • Previous team leadership, line management, technical lead or Responsible Engineer experience.
  • Extensive experience in EC&I design and leadership within the nuclear sector or highly regulated environments.
  • Deep knowledge of nuclear safety, regulation, and quality assurance processes.
  • Knowledge or EC&I principals, design tools and relevant guidelines, standards and practices (e.g., BS, IEC, IEEE – in particular IEC 61508, 61511, 61513, 61226 and ONR SAPs / TAGS).
  • Knowledge and experience in the systematic design lifecycle of a C&I system; including specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of safety or process critical I&C Systems.
  • Knowledge of high integrity hardware or software-based control systems for industrial equipment. 
  • Knowledge of systems engineering and system conceptual design is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and manage complex technical risks.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and client engagement skills.
  • Experience in shaping and influencing technical strategy, standards, and governance.
  • Recognised as a subject matter expert within EC&I engineering.
