NRL are currently recruiting for a Senior Ecology Manager for work supporting HS2 with a lcient of ours, an engineering consultancy on a contract basis.

About the role:
  • Provide professional leadership for all ecological matters in accordance with the Hybrid Bill/Act, the Environmental Minimum Requirements, technical standards, specifications and procedures established by the client, as well as wider existing ecology related legislation and policy, where relevant.
  • Influence (including coaching and up-skilling where necessary) and provision of specialist ecological advice to the colleagues and senior leadership team to ensure ecological issues are a key consideration in project decision-making and management processes.
  • Provide specialist advice, identifying risks and opportunities in the development of the assurance processes, programme development and procurement strategies.
  • Accountable for securing the delivery of Organisational great crested newt and badger licences, acting as Appointed Person, nominated to act as a single point of contact for Natural England with regard to these licences and expected to oversee their use including authorising employees and Accredited Agents to act under the licence, training, record keeping, reporting and compliance.
  • Provide detailed and specialist advice and guidance (which may include presentations and workshops) to Contractors in the delivery of the Organisational licences for great crested newts and badgers.
  • Accountable for developing and delivering the compliance criteria relating to the HS2 Organisational licences, including review, provision of feedback and approval of all Contractor Method Statements on detailed proposals for mitigation design and implementation.
  • Liaise with a range of technical stakeholders, including statutory bodies and encourage an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach.
  • Technical review of all other relevant Contractor documentation to ensure that ecological requirements are fully considered, including Ecology Site Management Plans, ecological site studies, designs, mitigation proposals and reporting.
  • Responsible for managing work deliverables, forward planning, and engagement with external and internal stakeholders in relation to ecological issues.
  • Provide compliance checks and audit visits to record Contractor compliance with ecological requirements and commitments and the provision of constructive review and feedback.
  • Working with other members of the Environment team in supporting delivery of ecological and environmental management tasks.
What you will need:

SKILLS
  • Effective verbal communication skills and ability to be understood by regulators, ecologists and non-specialists, including giving presentations and managing meetings.
  • Effective Stakeholder Management and interpersonal skills
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of cost delivery, programme and the need to deliver an integrated, high quality solution that meets all design and functional requirements.
  • Effective organisation skills with the flexibility and the ability to adapt and prioritise tasks.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Positive attitude towards problem solving
KNOWLEDGE
  • Membership of CIEEM and chartered status with a relevant body (e.g. CIEEM, Society for the Environment); or working towards these.
  • Knowledge of UK ecology legislation, policy and practice.
  • Knowledge of the design and implementation of mitigation measures for animals on complex projects.
  • Knowledge of the licensing and consenting process for protected species and other ecological receptors.
  • Knowledge of the design and implementation of mitigation measures for a range of protected species and sensitive habitats on complex projects
TYPE OF EXPERIENCE
  • Delivering ecology programmes for major development schemes
  • Experienced in the design and implementation of ecological mitigation measures and able to be suitably experienced to act as the Appointed Person on HS2 Organisational licences.
  • Experience of managing and advising on protected species licensing issues and licence applications.
  • Experience of presenting specialist technical information and providing guidance and advice to all levels of ecologist.
  • Experience of working with, advising and directing contractors.
  • Experience of habitat translocation and habitat creation schemes.
  • Experience of management of complex and multiple interfaces.
