SENIOR MECHANICAL PROPOSALS ENGINEER within the DESIGN FUNCTION

Due to Vital Energi's continued growth, They require a Senior Mechanical Proposals Engineer based at The Head Office in Blackburn or Glasgow, to work in this exciting and growing sector of the industry.

The Role
Reporting to the Pre-Construction Director, this role involves a broad range of RIBA Stage 2 & 3 design including District Heating systems and energy centre design including CHP and heat pumps. This will include working closely with our Energy Analysts and wider Bid Team to undertake robust concept designs including initial plant selections, site investigations and surveys, client meetings and input into project submissions and presentations.  

Working within the Design team, you will be responsible for significant elements of the mechanical design, including initial energy centre layout, boiler and pump sizing, pressurisation, expansion, water treatment, de-aeration/dirt separation, pipe sizing and coordination with electrical, architectural and structural design. Other key duties involve the writing of RIBA Stage 2 reports to support Tender and Bid submissions. Familiarity with large-scale thermal generating plant such as large shell & tube boilers and CHP engines is essential. Knowledge of heat pump technology and other technologies such as gas turbines would be advantageous.

Along with project accountability, you will be responsible for junior mechanical engineers of varying levels including Trainee / Juniors and Engineers. This will include allocation of work, reviewing and checking of documentation along with ensuring all projects responsibilities are delivered on time and to programme.

 

Key Duties
  • Lead the Stage 2 design of distributed energy schemes, energy centres, DH networks up to the point of heat delivery
  • Coordination with other disciplines including electrical, architectural and structural engineers
  • Appraisal and interpretation of the client’s requirements including Tender documentation
  • Specifying the engineering aspects for tendering works in the absence of client tender documentation
  • Have an awareness of cost implications within design
  • Ability to design systems in the form of calculations, equipment selection and process operation
  • Liaising with external designers, customers and Vital Energi’s in-house Bid Team and Energy Analysts
  • Compliance with CDM requirements and our in-house design processes
  • Conduct Risk Assessments
  • Ability to design systems in the form of schematics, calculations, equipment selection, drawings and BMS control operating strategies
  • Ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice with company procedures
  • Work closely with the client to further develop relationships and promote the company


The Person
  • The successful candidates will ideally be qualified at Degree level, with a minimum of 5 to 7 years’ experience in a design/ design build environment. 
  • Sound understanding of design principles including heating/ cooling distribution, Boiler/ CHP systems, with steam system design principles being advantageous but not essential.
  • Good understanding of current Building Regulations and energy incentive schemes.
  • Good understanding of current energy scheme route to market such as NDEE, ReFit, PSDS, etc.
  • An interest and some knowledge in biomass, gasification, geothermal and other renewable technologies
  • A familiarity of National Design Specifications (NES/NBS) and competent in AutoCAD (2D)
  • Experience/ competence of being effective communicators, who are confident and focused, with the ability to manage their time and duties in a professional and effective way.
