About the company: 

A multi-national organisation that provides management and consultancy services to the Built Environment, typically working on large multi-disciplinary capital national infrastructure projects, specialising in the energy and power sectors.
Project timescales vary from six months to six years, and values upwards of £500k.
Due to expansion, they are seeking an experienced Engineer to join their team in the North East.

About the Role: 

Candidates with experience working in infrastructure, oil & gas, power & offshore wind project is an advantage.
  • Undertaking the delivery of technical design elements with limited guidance and supervision for a range of projects of varying scale including the preparation, checking and submission of a range of client deliverables
  • Organising design reviews at key project stages, sharing knowledge learnt during the delivery of projects to improve discipline efficiency and productivity
  • Developing and reviewing specifications, e.g. materials and workmanship specifications, project briefs, method statements
  • Managing through the programming and control of appropriate resources in the delivery of a range of projects of varying scale, ensuring that any issues with potential to impact on programme and/or scope are identified and communicated internally
  • “Buddying” at least one Graduate Engineer or Technician
  • Developing drawing and sketching skills to be able to produce drawings to illustrate concept appraisals, feasibility studies and final design details.
  • Conceiving approximate scheme solutions to assess the viability of alternative materials and forms of construction.
  • Solving structural engineering problems using a variety of suitable methods of analysis and media, including traditional methods, using hand calculations, and computer analysis using proprietary software, understanding the limitations of such techniques.
The structural design software packages that are used include:
  • Tekla suite – Tekla Structural Designer, etc.
  • S-Frame.
  • S-Steel and S-Concrete.
  • SAP2000.
  • ETABS.
  • Robot.
  • TEDDS.
  • Hilti-Profis.
  • RCC Spreadsheets.
  •  Other bespoke structural software developed in-house (including embodied carbon calculators).
  • All of this links into Autodesk REVIT Structure, which is the company’s default BIM package.
About the candidate:
  • Will be working towards ‘Chartered Engineer’ status and will have undertaken a formal training review with a relevant professional Institution, or, a suitably experienced mentor.
  • If progressed through the ‘Apprentice route’ will have achieved ‘Incorporated Engineer’ status, or, as a minimum will be ‘EngTech’ qualified with a recognised Institution.
Will be developing knowledge/experience of:
 
  • Communicating effectively and being able to prepare/deliver presentations, project precis, design concepts, reports etc
  • Conceiving approximate scheme solutions to assess the viability of alternative materials and forms of construction.
  • Solving structural engineering problems using a variety of suitable methods of analysis and media, including both traditional methods, using hand calculations, and computer analysis using proprietary software. Demonstrating an understanding of the limitations of such techniques
  • Using appropriate standards/Codes of Practice, specifications, internal publications, technical agency publications, bulletins, reports, commercial and relevant publications from other professional institutions, etc., and applying the requirements or recommendations of these documents on their projects
  • Understanding the properties and behaviour of the primary construction materials, i.e. steel, concrete, masonry and timber, such that they can determine the advantages and disadvantages of the use of these materials and should understand the principles of material selection
  • Relevant environmental and sustainability objectives, issues and legislation, and their influence on the design process and solutions adopted.
  • Construction techniques, construction plant and machinery, temporary support systems, material testing procedures, construction programmes, construction sequencing, etc, ideally gained through a period of site experience on one or more construction projects.
