Living in Israel

Living in Israel offers a Mediterranean lifestyle in a culturally and ethnically diverse society, with Jewish, Arab, Druze and other communities contributing to life in cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The cost of living is high, particularly for housing, groceries, and childcare, with smaller cities somewhat more affordable. Tel Aviv is particularly expensive to live in.

  • The average cost of a weekly grocery shop is ILS500 - ILS900 ($140 – 250)
  • Monthly rent varies depending on location, with it costing on average ILS6,000 - ILS9,000 ($1,650 - $2,500) in Tel Aviv and ILS4,500 – 7,000 ($1,250 - $1,950) in Jerusalem
  • Monthly childcare costs between ILS2,000 - ILS4,500 ($550 - $1,250)
  • Petrol and diesel both roughly cost between ILS7 - ILS7.50 ($2 - $2.30) per litre

Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. Expats can use a foreign licence with an International Driving Permit for up to a year. To obtain a local Israeli licence, residents must apply through the Ministry of Transport, complete an eye exam, and either convert their existing licence or pass theory and practical tests.

Weather in Israel

Israel has a Mediterranean climate along the coast and a drier, hotter climate inland and in the south. Summers are hot, with temperatures from 25 - 35°C, while winters are mild, averaging 10 - 18°C on the coast and 5 - 15°C inland. Most rainfall occurs between November and March, although southern desert areas remain mostly dry year-round.

Language and integration support

Expats in Israel can access Ulpan courses (Hebrew language classes), cultural centres, and community programmes to support integration. Many employers, especially in tech and multinational companies, provide language training, and expat networks offer practical advice and social connections. While learning Hebrew helps with daily life and career opportunities, a good knowledge of English will make integration manageable for newcomers.
