In Iraq, work arrangements generally fall into formal employment governed by labour law, and contracting arrangements governed by civil law. Employment offers greater legal protection and benefits, while contracting provides flexibility but fewer statutory rights.

Common types of employment

Common types of contracting

Independent contractor/consultancy (ʿAqd Istishāra / Muqāwala) – Civil contracts based on deliverables, not working hours, with no statutory employment benefits Freelance/self-employment (ʿAmal Ḥurr) – Individuals work independently, invoice for services, and manage their own taxes and social security Employer-sponsored contract work (Taʿāqud Bi-Kafāla) – Common for expats, where work and residency are tied to a local sponsor or employer
