Living in Romania

Living in Romania offers a relaxed, community-oriented lifestyle with a strong emphasis on family, food, and social life. Cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Timișoara feature growing urban scenes, and the country is culturally rich. Romania is generally affordable compared to Western Europe, though living costs are higher in major cities, while smaller towns and rural areas remain very budget friendly.

  • The average cost of a weekly grocery shop for a small family is 200-300 RON (€39 - €59)
  • Monthly rent for a 2-bedroom apartment costs roughly 1,500 – 3,000 RON (€295 - €589); these costs are higher in Bucharest
  • Monthly childcare on average costs 1,500 – 3,000 RON (€295 - €589)
  • Petrol costs roughly 7.5-8.5 RON per litre (€1.47 - €1.67) and diesel costs 7.8 - 8.8 RON per litre (€1.53 - €1.73)

Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road in Romania. EU/EEA licence holders can use their existing licence for up to one year after establishing residence, after which it must be exchanged for a Romanian licence. This can be done without taking a driving test. Non-EU/EEA licence holders can drive for up to 90 days on their original licence, but must exchange it to continue driving; depending on reciprocity agreements, this may require a practical and theory test.

Weather in Romania

Romania has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot, with temperatures typically between 25-35°C in cities and plains, while mountainous regions remain cooler. Winters are cold, ranging from -5°C to 5°C in the plains and dropping below -15°C in mountainous regions. Overall, Romania experiences hot and sunny summers and snowy winters, with regional variations based on elevation and proximity to the Black Sea.

Language and integration support

While formal government-supported language programmes are limited, newcomers can access private language schools, university courses, and online resources. NGOs, expat associations, and some local councils offer integration support, helping with language and cultural orientation. Some workplaces may also provide language and cultural support for international employees.

For any translation needs - especially those required for work permit or visa applications - our dedicated Languages team is ready to support you. They provide accurate, timely translations and can guide you through the process to ensure all necessary documents meet the required standards.
