Average Salary

The average salary across all sectors in China is approximately CNY 10,000  11,500 per month ($1,400  $1,620), with significant regional variation. Salaries are typically higher in Tier 1 cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, and lower in smaller provincial cities.

Expats working in senior, technical, or specialist roles can expect substantially higher earnings, particularly in engineering, energy, technology, manufacturing, automation, and digital sectors. Monthly salaries for experienced specialists commonly range from CNY 30,000  60,000 ($4,200  $8,450), while senior managers, niche technical experts, and executive leaders may earn CNY 60,000  100,000+ per month ($8,450  $14,100+). Expat compensation packages often include housing allowances, international health insurance, schooling support, relocation costs, annual bonuses, and taxefficient allowances, particularly for employersponsored assignments.

Common types of Employment or Contracting

China supports a range of employment and contracting models, particularly for skilled international professionals.

Common types of employment

Permanent employment contract (劳动合同 – Láodòng Hétóng) – The most common form of employment in China. Employees are entitled to statutory benefits, social insurance, and labour protections under Chinese employment law Fixed‑term employment contract (固定期限劳动合同 – Gùdìng Qīxiàn Láodòng Hétóng) – An employment contract with a clearly defined start and end date, often used for project work, temporary roles, or specialist positions. Repeated renewals may, in some cases, trigger conversion to an open-ended contract Secondment/assignment-based employment (外派或派遣 – Wàipài huò Pàiqiǎn) – Common for multinational organisations transferring employees to China on a temporary assignment. The employee typically remains employed by the home entity while working in China under local regulatory and immigration arrangements

Common types of contracting

Sole proprietor (个体工商户 - Gètǐ Gōngshānghù) – Engagement of a registered individual contracting as a sole proprietor, non-employment basis. This model is tightly regulated in China, and arrangements must be carefully structured to avoid being reclassified as employment Business-to-business contracting (企业对企业合作 – Qǐyè duì Qǐyè Hézuò) – Services provided through a registered company, either a foreign-invested enterprise or Chinese entity. This is the most common and compliant structure for ongoing consultancy or project-based contracting

Weather in China

China has a varied climate due to its size. Northern regions experience cold, dry winters and hot summers, while southern regions are warmer and more humid year-round. Summer temperatures typically range from 28 – 38°C, while winter temperatures range from -5°C in the north to 10°C in the south, with colder conditions in inland and northern provinces.

Language and integration support
