Living in Jordan

Jordan offers a welcoming lifestyle with a blend of traditional Middle Eastern culture and modern urban living. The country is relatively small but diverse, with bustling cities like Amman, historic sites such as Petra, and desert landscapes like Wadi Rum. Jordan is culturally rich, with a mix of Arab traditions and a growing international community, particularly in the capital.

The cost of living is moderate compared to Western countries but can be relatively high in Amman, especially for housing, schooling, and imported goods. Smaller cities and rural areas are more affordable.

  • The average cost of a weekly grocery shop for a small family is JOD 40 – 70 ($55 - $100)
  • Monthly rent for a 2 – 3-bedroom property can cost JOD 450 – 1,200 ($630 - $1,690), depending on location, city, and property standard
  • Monthly childcare at a private daycare costs roughly JOD 200 – 500 ($280 - $700) depending on facility, location, and level of care
  • Fuel prices can fluctuate often depending on regional and global oil markets. Petrol tends to cost around JOD 0.90 – 1.10 per litre ($1.25 - $1.55), while diesel costs JOD 0.70 – 0.85 per litre ($1 - $1.20)

Vehicles in Jordan drive on the right-hand side of the road. Expats can initially use an international driving permit, but long-term residents are required to obtain a Jordanian driving licence. This typically involves submitting documentation, passing a medical check, and in some cases completing a driving test, depending on your country of origin.

Weather in Jordan

Jordan has a predominantly arid to semi-arid climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, cooler winters. Summer temperatures often reach 30–40°C, particularly in desert regions such as Wadi Rum and the Jordan Valley.

Winters are generally mild, with temperatures ranging from 5–15°C, although higher elevations like Amman can experience colder conditions and occasional frost. Rainfall is limited and mostly occurs during the winter months, while much of the country remains dry for the majority of the year.

Language and integration support

Jordan provides a range of language and integration support options, particularly in urban centres like Amman. Arabic language courses are widely available through universities, cultural institutes, and private providers, while English is commonly spoken in business and professional settings, making integration easier for expats. Community groups and expat networks also offer support in settling into life in the country.
