However, expats working in technical or specialist roles – particularly in sectors such as energy, engineering, infrastructure, telecommunications and development projects – often receive significantly higher compensation packages.

International professionals employed by multinational companies typically earn 120,000 – 350,000 GMD ($1,700 - $5,000+) per month, depending on experience, seniority and the organisation. In many cases, expat packages also include additional benefits such as housing allowances, private healthcare, transportation, relocation support and education allowances for dependents.

Living in The Gambia

The Gambia offers a relaxed lifestyle centred around its Atlantic coastline and the Gambia River. Known as the “Smiling Coast of Africa”, the country is recognised for its welcoming culture and strong sense of community.

Most expats live in the Greater Banjul Area, particularly in neighbourhoods such as Koloti, Kotu, Senegambia and Fajara, where international schools, restaurants, and coastal housing are concentrated. While everyday expenses can be relatively low compared with Western countries, imported goods and high-quality housing can be more expensive in expat-focused areas.

  • The average cost of a weekly grocery shop for a small family is 3,000 – 5,000 GMD ($43 - $68)
  • The average cost of monthly rent for expat-standard housing is around 50,000 – 120,000+ GMD ($685 - $1650+)
  • Monthly childcare costs, on average, 6,000 GMD ($86)
  • Petrol costs roughly 80 GMD per litre ($1.14) and diesel costs around 78 GMD per litre ($1.11). These costs are volatile and can fluctuate often depending on regional and global oil markets

Vehicles in The Gambia drive on the right-hand side of the road. Expats may initially use an international driver’s licence for a limited period, but long-term residents are usually required to obtain a Gambian driver’s licence through the national licencing authority. The process typically involves submitting identification documents and completing administrative registration.

Weather in The Gambia

The Gambia has a tropical climate characterised by a long dry season and a shorter rainy season. The dry season runs from November to May, bringing warm temperatures, sunshine and low humidity, making it the most comfortable time of year for outdoor activities. The rainy season typically occurs between June and October, when heavy but short rain showers are common.

Temperatures remain warm throughout the year, with daytime highs usually ranging between 30°C and 35°C, while nighttime temperatures typically fall between 20°C and 24°C.

Language and integration support

English is the official language of The Gambia and is widely used in government, education, and business, which makes it relatively easy for international professionals to integrate into the workplace. However, learning basic phrases in commonly spoken local languages such as Mandinka or Wolof can be helpful when interacting with local communities.

Community groups, international organisations and expat networks often provide informal support for newcomers, helping professionals connect with local communities and navigate everyday life in the country.
