Living in New Zealand

New Zealand is known for a relaxed lifestyle, strong outdoor culture and high quality of life. Cities like Auckland and Wellington are culturally diverse and offer ample amenities and employment opportunities, but also tend to have higher living costs than rural areas.

  • The average cost of a weekly grocery shop for a small family is NZD 150 – 220 ($90 - $130)
  • Typical monthly rent costs for a 2 -3 bedroom property are NZD 3,000 – 4,500 ($1,750 - $2,600). This is typical for Auckland and Wellington, and costs may be cheaper in smaller towns and rural areas.
  • Monthly childcare costs roughly NZD 900 – 1,400 ($530 - $820)
  • Petrol costs roughly NZD 2.70 a litre ($1.55), and diesel costs around NZD 2.10 per litre ($1.20). These costs can fluctuate depending on regional and global oil markets.

Vehicles in New Zealand drive on the left-hand side of the road. Expats can use a valid overseas driver’s licence for up to 12 months. After this, most must convert to a New Zealand licence, which can involve a theory and/or practical test depending on the country of origin.
