Living in Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers a fast-paced, international lifestyle with world-class infrastructure, efficient public transport, and a vibrant mix of Eastern and Western cultural influences. The city is highly multicultural, with large expat communities from Europe, North America, Australia, and across Asia. Districts such as Central, Mid-Levels, Discovery Bay, and Sai Kung are particularly popular among expats. While Hong Kong offers excellent career opportunities and a dynamic social scene, it is also known for having one of the highest costs of living in the world, especially when it comes to housing.

  • The average cost of a weekly grocery shop for a small family is roughly HKD 900 – 1,300 ($115 - $165), depending on whether local or imported products are purchased
  • Monthly rent for a 2 – 3-bedroom property costs around HKD 35,000 – 80,000+ ($4,480 – $10,200+) in popular expat districts
  • Monthly childcare costs around HKD 6,000 – 12,000 ($770 - $1,540) depending on the type of nursery or childcare provider
  • Fuel costs fluctuate often depending on regional and global oil markets. Petrol costs roughly HKD 24 ($3.07) per litre, while diesel costs around HKD 20 ($2.56) per litre

Vehicles in Hong Kong drive on the left-hand side of the road. Expats may be able to exchange certain overseas driving licences for a Hong Kong licence without taking a driving test, depending on the country of issue. Others may need to apply for a local licence through the Transport Department and pass both written and practical driving tests.

Weather in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a humid, subtropical climate, characterised by hot, humid summers and mild winters. The region also experiences a monsoon season and occasional typhoons between May and September.

Language and integration support
