Living in The Philippines

The Philippines offers a relaxed, social, and family-oriented lifestyle. It is one of the most culturally diverse countries in Southeast Asia, with over 7,000 islands, multiple ethnic groups, and strong regional identities. English is widely spoken, making it particularly accessible for expats.

The cost of living is relatively low by Western standards, though Metro Manila, Makati, and Bonifacio Global City are significantly more expensive than provincial areas or smaller cities like Cebu or Davao.

  • The average cost of a weekly grocery shop for a small family is PHP 2,000 – 3,500 ($35 - $62)

  • Monthly rent for a 2 – 3-bedroom property costs PHP 40,000 – 100,000 ($710 - $1,780) in large city centres and expat areas, and PHP 15,000 – 40,000 ($265 - $710)

  • Monthly childcare for a private daycare or nanny costs around PHP 8,000 – 20,000 ($140 - $355), international schools are more expensive

  • Fuel costs are volatile and change regularly depending on regional and international fuel markets. Generally, petrol costs around PHP 60 – 70 per litre ($1.05 - $1.25), while diesel costs around PHP 55 – 65 per litre ($0.95 – $1.15)

Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road in the Philippines. Expats may use a valid foreign driving licence for up to 90 days, after which they must convert it or apply for a Philippine licence through the Land Transportation Office. This typically involves submitting documentation, passing a medical exam, and in some cases completing a written or practical driving test.

Weather in The Philippines

The Philippines has a tropical climate with consistently warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. The dry season (November to May) is hot and sunny, while the wet season (June to October) is characterised by heavy rainfall and occasional typhoons. Dry season temperatures can reach 30 - 34°C, while the wet season can be as low as 24 - 26°C. Coastal regions tend to feel hotter due to humidity, while elevated areas such as Baguio offer cooler conditions year-round.

Language and integration support

The Philippines offers a relatively smooth integration experience for expats due to the widespread English usage. Local government units and expat communities often provide informal support networks, while private institutions offer language and cultural orientation services.
