Employment protections apply for the duration of the contract Part-Time Employment (Punë me Kohë të Pjesshme) – Reduced working hours with proportional salary and benefits

Common types of contracting

Freelancer (I Vetëpunësuar) – Individuals registered as self-employed and responsible for their own tax and pension contributions. Living in Kosovo

Kosovo offers a relaxed, community-oriented lifestyle with a strong café culture and close family networks. The country has a predominantly Albanian ethnic majority, alongside Serbian and other minority communities, contributing to cultural diversity and varied traditions. The cost of living is generally low compared to Western Europe, although prices in the capital, Pristina, are higher than in smaller towns.

  • A weekly grocery shop for a small family costs roughly 45 - 70 per week

  • Monthly rent for a 2-3 bedroom property costs around 400 - 800 (higher in central Pristina)

  • Private childcare costs roughly 150 - 300 per month

  • Petrol costs around 1.40 per litre, whilst diesel costs 1.35 per litre – these fluctuate heavily

Vehicles in Kosovo drive on the right-hand side of the road. Expats may use their foreign driving licence for a limited period, after which conversion to a Kosovo licence may be required, depending on bilateral agreements. This typically involves submitting documentation and possibly completing a local driving test.

Weather in Kosovo

Kosovo has a continental climate with distinct seasons. Summers are warm to hot, with average highs between 28°C and 35°C. Winters are cold, with temperatures often ranging between -5°C and 5°C, and snowfall is common, particularly in mountainous areas.

Language and integration support

Integration support is available through local municipalities and community organisations. While there is limited state-funded language provision compared to some EU countries, private language schools offer Albanian and Serbian lessons tailored to expats. International organisations and NGOs also provide networking and integration opportunities.

For any translation needs - especially those required for work permit or visa applications - our dedicated Languages team is ready to support you. They provide accurate, timely translations and can guide you through the process to ensure all necessary documents meet the required standards.
